All registrants will receive copies of the selected readings, which should be read in advance of the class. An optional wine and cheese reception will follow.

The greatest work of political theory of late antiquity, the City of God was written to defend Christians against the accusation that they were responsible for the sack of Rome. To meet that charge, Augustine had to develop a theory of the “two cities,” investigate the nature of free will and divine omniscience, and develop the influential account of original sin. The twenty-four book masterpiece that resulted became a cornerstone of Western thought.

Jim Wetzel (Professor of Philosophy and Augustinian Endowed Chair in the Thought of St. Augustine at Villanova University) will lead this three hour master class.

Readings:

The readings will consist of selections of Augustine’s City of God.

Both the required and recommended readings will be distributed to participants via Dropbox and PDFs. If you prefer, you can pick up a printout of the readings at Gavin House (1220 E. 58th Street) Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm once they are ready.
